Friday Movie Reviews 9/25

Greetings,

So today I went to the local AMC theater and watched a couple of movies so I figured I would give a short little synopsis/review of each film.

  1. First movie of the day was Hotel Transylvania 2. I was not a big fan of the first movie so wasn't really looking forward to this movie and it did nothing to change my stance on the series. Premise of this film is that vampire Drac, voiced by Adam Sandler, has a vampire daughter Mavis, voiced by Selena Gomez, who gets married to human Jonathan, voiced by Andy Samberg. After the marriage they have a child Dennis, who was my favorite part of the movie, and Drac struggles to prove that he is not just a regular baby but is also a vampire. With the help of his friends, voiced by Sandler's normal friends Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, and David Spade, Drac seeks to prove once and for all that the baby is a vampire. The movie has a few jokes that will make you chuckle but no real laugh out loud moments and I almost fell asleep during it. Score of 5/10.
  2. Second movie of the day was The Intern starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. I was really looking forward to this film after seeing the trailers and it did not disappoint. The movie brings out some of the best acting from De Niro in sometime. Story is basically a 70-year-old retired widower discovers retirement isn't as great as it seems and seizes an opportunity to get back in the game becoming an intern at an online fashion site ran by Hathaway's character. Not only is the chemistry between De Niro and Hathaway great in their moments together but the times of great comedy are when he gets together with the gang that includes Adam Devine, Zack Pearlman, and Jason Orley. This is a great date night movie that both guy and girls can enjoy together. Score of 7.5/10.
  3. Third movie was Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials which is the 2nd movie in the Maze Runner trilogy. The first Maze Runner was a surprise enjoyment of a movie for me when it came out in 2014 so I was looking forward to the 2nd chapter. The story is after having escaped the Maze, the gladers now face a new set of challenges as they set out on a wasteland trying to find clues about the mysterious WCKD organization that placed them in the Maze to begin with. This movie was even more enjoyable to me than the first and I didn't feel that at the end they were trying as hard to get you ready for the next film as they were in the first. Score of 6.5/10.
  4. Fourth movie was Everest in IMAX 3D which is the only way this movie needs to be seen. After seeing the cast of this movie how could you not get excited with Jason Clarke, Martin Henderson, John Hawkes, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Josh Brolin, and Jake Gyllenhaal. This film is based on a true story and is about a group of people that go on a climbing expedition on Mt. Everest that goes well until things go drastically wrong due to a severe snow storm. The story is crazy and hard to believe that it actually happened but the performances of the actors together and the incredible filming make this movie a must see in theaters. Score 7/10.
  5. Final movie of the day was the one I was looking forward to the most, Black Mass. I was hoping desperately that this movie would be incredible and, while I don't think it will be the best picture of the year, it did everything I wanted it to. Johnny Depp is back in full force, should get a best lead actor nomination, and at times you almost forget it is him. Outstanding supporting cast lead by Joel Edgerton, who I think will get a best supporting actor nomination, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard and many others. This movie is the true story of Whitey Bulger, the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a mafia family invading his turf. This movie will at times make you hate humanity that people can do these sorts of things to other people, and even worse that they can get away with it for so long. This is a great movie but is also a really dark movie that at times has a dark humor to it but not for the faint of hearts. Score 8/10.
All in all it was a strong Friday at the movies. Good to finally be back as there hasn't really been anything out in the slow month of September. Now we are getting into Oscar season so more great movies should be coming out in the next couple weeks and I will continue to keep you guys posted.
