Friday Movie Reviews 10-09

Greetings,

So today I made another trip to the local AMC theater and watched another couple of movies so I figured I would give a short little synopsis/review of each film.

  1. First movie of the day, and wish I would have saved this for the last of the day, was The Martian. The story of the movie is during a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to survive and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. This movie feels like it should have started with Based on a True Story. This is a movie that proves why we go to a movie theater to watch. One of the best casts of the year with Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Sean Bean, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. I have to say this is my new favorite movie of the year. I score this one 9.75/10.
  2. Second movie of the day was The Walk. Based on a true story and following a documentary Man on a Wire is this film about a high-wire artist Phillippe Petit, in 1974, who recruits a team of people to help him realize his dream of walking the void between the World Trade Center towers. One of my favorite parts of the movie was seeing the Twin Towers up and glowing again in New York City. Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives another great performance and surrounds himself with a good team. The actually walk is the best part of this movie and the way it was shot will make you feel like you are on a thrill ride without even moving from your seat. Really enjoyed this movie and going to score it 7.5/10.
  3. Third movie, and the one I enjoyed the least of the four, is Pan. I was really looking forward to this film as it is a different look on the origin story of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tiger Lilly, and the rest of the Neverland gang. However I'm not really sure this movie knew what to do with itself. There are times when you see pieces of hope of a great movie and I enjoyed the acting by most of the characters but it was just a mess of a film searching for which audience to enjoy it and turned into a movie for no true group of people. Like I said it was cool to see a different take on the story but was hoping for a better movie. I will score this one 5/10.
  4. Fourth and last movie of the day was Sicario. Glad I had another movie after Pan and even more happy it was as good as this one. This movie follows an idealistic FBI agent, played by Emily Blunt, who is enlisted by a government task force, which includes Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border between the US and Mexico. The acting in this movie by Blunt, Brolin, and Del Toro is incredible and so believable that again you think this is based on a true story. The story is amazing and the directing is so good that there isn't a moment in the movie that is slow or dull. Not necessarily a movie that has to be seen in theaters but a movie that you absolutely must see, just make sure you don't see it right after or right before eating a big meal. Score this one a 8.75/10.
Have you seen any of these films? Agree or disagree with the scoring? Going to see any of these soon or looking forward to them? Let me know what you think.
