Split Movie Review
Split is a film I have been looking forward to with severe interest since I saw the first trailer some 5 months ago and it lived up to my expectations. The movie is directed by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) and stars James McAvoy in what may go down as one of the best performances of his career. McAvoy plays a character named Kevin who suffers from dissociative identity disorder which causes him to contain the personalities of 23 unique identities inside his mind. Compelled by one of his identities he is compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) as a war of survival rages inside of Kevin between all of those contained within him.
The film is a great psychological thriller which is what Shyamalan has directed very well during his career and as in all of his films is filled with twists that make the story even better. The movie is not perfect though, as the story is slow in parts and while McAvoy and Taylor-Joy give excellent performances some of the supporting characters don't really fit in very well. I would definitely recommend this film to fans of Shyamalan's original works such as The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable as it definitely comes from the same mold as those films. If you are a fan of a good thriller that will keep you guessing or want to see an amazing performance from a very talented actor then you will also enjoy this film. Make sure to hang out until you see the credits start rolling because there is a nice tease at the end of this film for fans of other Shyamalan movies.
I will score the film a 7.5/10 and say that it is definitely worth seeing in the theaters.
