Get Out Review

Get Out is the first film written and directed by Jordan Peele of Key and Peele fame. This movie, however, is a far departure from the outrageous humor in that show and the duo's first feature film Keanu. Get Out is a horror film following Chris and his girlfriend, Rose. Now that they have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean, her parents. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

This movie shows that Jordan Peele is positively fearless in both his writing and directing. It's not just incredibly suspenseful or a completely frightening concept but it turns society upside down in only a way the best movies can. Peele's film takes racism's more traditional forms like slavery and exploitation and shows them in a thoroughly modern appropriate spin. Somehow, though, through all of the horror Peele somehow manages to infuse the movie with his   satirical with making this film an experience that serves as an important reminder that we still have so much work left to do when it comes to the issue of equality. The cast is also excellent but the true artist of this film, Peele, completely shines through and I can not wait to see what genre he decides to take on next.

The movie will be released in theaters on 2/24, is rated "R", and definitely earns that rating so I wouldn't recommend this to anyone under the age of 17. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and score it as an 8.5/10.
