Kong: Skull Island Review
Kong: Skull Island re-imagines the origin of the mythic King Kong in a compelling and completely original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific, unaware that they're crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong. Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly as well as a wide assortment of supporting cast members.
If you go into this movie just looking for an insane action-filled and beautifully shot monster movie, then this film will give you exactly what you are looking for. However, there isn't really much more to the film than when the monsters and Kong are on screen. The story and dialogue from the characters is easily the weak links of the movie which makes it seem like an old '70s or '80s action B-movie. The comedy throughout never really hits, except for a few of the comedic moments from John C. Reilly. The acting performances are sub-par at best with the exception of Samuel L. Jackson and I honestly believe they could have renamed the film "Kong v Samuel L Jackson".
Hollywood's new big fad is the creating of film universes such as Marvel, DC, and Universal's new monster movie franchises. I believe some of the biggest faults of this film have to do with the fact you can clearly tell this is an awesome monster film held up by the need to coexist in the same world as the Godzilla film from 2014. All-in-all Kong: Skull Island is an enjoyable movie that will be enjoyed by many people that love the films that you can turn off your brain during. I enjoyed the Kong and monster moments very much but the rest of the film left a lot to be desired so I can't score the film any higher than a 6.5/10.
There is a during the credits and after the credits scene.
