Power Rangers Review

When I was younger one of my favorite TV shows was Power Rangers  and even enjoyed the original 1995 movie for the goofiness that it was so I was pretty excited when hearing they were rebooting the franchise. That excitement was even more enhanced after seeing the trailers and how well it seemed the cast got along together. The story, like the original, follows a group of high-school kids who are infused with unique superpowers and are forced to harness their abilities in order to save Angel Grove.

I'm happy to say that I enjoyed this film even though it is definitely not one of the best made movies around. The movie centers more around the stories of the main cast and their backgrounds leading them into the joining of the team than it does on them actually being the Power Rangers as this is to be the first in a series of films, depending on how well the movie does at the box office. The main 3, Dacre Montgomery (Jason/Red Ranger), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), and R.J. Cyler (Billy/Blue Ranger) are the clear stand outs from this film and are part of the reason the movie is so enjoyable and lock you in to the story being continued into a 2nd and 3rd film.

While the Rangers, Zordon (Bryan Cranston), and Alpha 5 (voiced by Bill Hader) are really good in the movie, the villain Rita (Elizabeth Banks) felt like she was more out of the cheesiness of the original series and not the more serious tone they were going for in this new reiteration. Also the movie did seem to run a little long and some of the issues throughout the film are repetitive and could have been cut down by about 20 minutes. Other than the few issues with the villain and the run-on there isn't really much else wrong with this film and I think that even non-fans of the original series can enjoy this movie. Score 7/10.
