Fate of the Furious Review
In this 8th movie of the Fast Franchise the underlying theme of "family-first" is put to its ultimate test. The story, which is never really the strength of the films, follows Vin Diesel's Dom character as he is tormented by new villain Cipher, played by Charlize Theron. As shown in the trailers Dom is forced to turn on his family by Cipher and the team is forced to track the two down across the world. All of the stars are back including Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and Jason Statham who actually teams up to help the crew track down Cipher for his own personal reasons.
The franchise has never really been known to be excellent film making or story telling and this movie is more of the same crazy action set pieces that continues to up the ante and destruction that makes this film series a true summer blockbuster. It is, however, crazy to see the kind of true acting talents that this movie brings in with the additions of two Oscar-winning actresses: Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren. If you go into this movie expecting an action movie that will make your jaw drop with some of the crazy scenes and even some humor that will have you laughing throughout then you will enjoy this movie even though it definitely isn't a great film.
The movie is 2 hours and 16 minutes and it really doesn't need to be over 2 hours long. Also, some of the jokes get a little tired and played out by the end of the movie as they seem to linger on the same comedy tropes a number of times. While the movie is expected to be over the top, some of the fantastical elements of what the characters can do, especially Dom, get even a little bit to far into the unbelievable realm. I did enjoy the movie but believe that is an inferior film to Fast 5, 6, and 7 which is not a good direction for the franchise to be heading since they already have plans for the 9th and 10th films of the series which will definitely keep coming if the movies continue to make the amounts of money they are.
Score 6.5/10
