Wonder Woman Review
An Amazon princess, Diana (Gal Gadot), finds her idyllic life on an island occupied only by female warriors interrupted when a pilot (Chris Pine) crash-lands nearby. After rescuing him, she learns that World War I is engulfing the planet, and vows to use her superpowers to restore peace. Wonder Woman is the first true female super heroine introduced back in 1941 and after 76 years she finally gets the big-screen debut that she deserves in this great film directed by Patty Jenkins.
I want to start off my review of this movie apologizing to Gal and the people who cast her as Wonder Woman for doubting her when she was cast in the role. While I still believe she is not a top-tier acting talent, she was absolutely perfect for the Diana character that we got in both Batman v Superman and this Wonder Woman film. She absolutely crushes the action sequences, that were shot beautifully by Patty Jenkins, and brings such a natural innocence that is needed from the character who has spent her entire life growing up on a secluded island and then is thrust into the real world.
The supporting cast for this film: Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Said Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner, and Eugene Braverock, also helps to make this a more rounded film with the great action set pieces with just the right amount of humor and drama mixed in. The movie does what other DCEU films have done in having a good story throughout most of the film, is actually fun and not the usual dreariness that has been the staple of the previous films, and the acting chemistry between all of the characters, mainly that of Gadot and Pine actually makes you believe in their relationship and feel what they feel.
One of my only real downfalls of the film is, while i thoroughly enjoyed the finale performances and visuals, the villain is not really much of the surprise they try to make it out to be and the reveal that is built up to throughout the movie is nothing really special. Other than a not so stellar third act, which I can easily forgive, the film is an absolutely stunning accomplishment for the comic book genre going forward with a great female director and female lead.
This is one film that I truly believe all movie fans will enjoy and not just those of the comic-book movie fanatics. Gal is absolutely wonderful as Wonder Woman and I can't wait to see what her and Jenkins pull together in the second film that has already been confirmed by WB. This is probably my 3rd favorite film of the year so far behind Logan and Get Out and I hope they continue to let her grow in the upcoming Justice League film in November.
8.5/10
