Atomic Blonde Review
Atomic Blonde is a high-stakes, global action-thriller that takes place in the city of Berlin, on the eve of the Wall's collapse and the shifting of superpower alliances. Charlize Theron portrays Lorraine, a top-level spy for MI6, who is dispatched to Berlin to take down a ruthless espionage ring that has just killed an undercover agent for "the list". She is ordered to cooperate with Berlin station chief David Percival (James Mcavoy), and the two from an uneasy alliance.
I want to start off saying what I liked about this movie because it does slightly outweigh the negatives for me. When you go into this type of movie you expect a bad-to-the-bone female protagonist beating every man that stands in her way and that is what works best about this movie. Charlize Theron does pretty much all of her own stunts and it makes the movie seem even more realistic when the characters actually seem tired after a long fight. Mcavoy's character Percival was one of my favorite parts of the movie as we see just another of the many characters that he can play so well. While there really isn't much of real story to the film the twist that they try to give to the viewers in the end does kind of get a little "huh" out of you.
The music is so poorly used in this movie that it almost pulled me out of the moment every time a song came on. The fight scenes that didn't have just another '80s song playing in the background were my favorites as they seemed more brutal and what this type of movie should be going for. As I said before, there isn't really much of a story that flows through the entire movie and some of the characters are brought in for no reason or just not really flushed out fully. The worst example of this is Sofia Boutella's character that is literally just brought in to the movie to sleep with Theron's character and give that scene in the trailer to try to get the guys excited. This movie is definitely rated R and honestly some of the reasons it was rated that way could have been left out of the movie. I would recommend people waiting to see this movie in their home as it is not one that you need to spend your money to see in the theater but it should be seen.
6.5/10
