Baby Driver Review

Baby Driver, directed by Edgar Wright, is the story of a talented, young getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love, and freedom. The movie also stars Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and Lily James.

This is not only my favorite movie so far of this year it may be one of my favorite movies of the past few years. It may seem like I am over stating the incredible quality of this film, but trust me after the first 10 minutes of the movie you will be completely locked in as well. The amazing fluidity in which Edgar Wright puts the music, editing, and performances together gives Baby Driver the sensation of riding along in a fast car with the perfect song coming on and the world just seems to fall into place the right way. It is amazing how Wright blends the noises of sirens, squealing brakes, and even gunshots together to match up with the massively diverse playlist bringing a new appreciation to familiar tracks.

Besides the music, the amazingly fast, violent, and absurdly ridiculous driving, which is actually performed by stunt drivers and not digital effects, totally helps to keep you on the edge of your seat. Even the performances are outstanding from the beginning to the end and you can even recognize nice nods to movies of the past, including a nice little Singin' in the Rain moment close to the beginning of the film. Ansel Elgort is great as Baby leading throughout the film and the chemistry between him and Lily James' character is very rich and natural. The personalities around Baby are pretty insane including a very different Jon Hamm played character Buddy, Jamie Foxx's funny yet scary character Bats, and the always great Kevin Spacey as Doc and they make the fans root for Baby all that much more.

I have tried to find something I didn't like about this movie, but minus a few nitpicking moments that could have been shortened a little or cut out, I really can't come up with any major flaw about this movie. I would recommend seeing Baby Driver on the biggest screen you can and definitely with the best sound system possible as the music and sounds of this movie are really another great character throughout.

9.5/10
