Dunkirk Review
Acclaimed writer/director Christopher Nolan brings to life this World War II thriller about the evacuation of Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk before Nazi forces can take hold. The movie includes an outstanding ensemble cast including Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, James D'Arcy, Cillian Murphy, and Mark Rylance.
The true story of this event is such a daunting task for any person to try and take on but if anyone is going to do it I'm glad it was Christopher Nolan. I don't know how any other person could have created a better tribute to the survival of those men and the ones who came to save them than this extraordinary film. The score by Hans Zimmer also becomes a character of its own in the many moments where there is no dialogue throughout the film where the blend of action and music is almost perfect. I also enjoyed the different elements of the story showing how some peoples morale values can be tested when it comes to their survival and how far people are willing to go to save others or themselves.
There are a few things that didn't work for me in the movie though. The first being the way the movie tries to but doesn't really give you the full scope of the 400,000 troops on the beach and the 700 ships that came to get them. Also, while this is something that I enjoyed, I think the way that Nolan cuts through the scenes and puts them back together can confuse some of the general movie watchers. Honestly, besides a few tiny details, this is almost a perfect film that I would recommend people seeing in IMAX if at all possible just to get the full views of even just the moments of Tom Hardy in his plane.
8.5/10
