Top 10 of 2017 So Far

So we have reached the month of July meaning half of the year is now in the books. With that being the case I figured it was time for me to put out what my Top 10 movies of the first half of the year have been. While I may have scored some movies higher than others that are lower on the list, this is my top 10 in total theater/movie experiences of the year.

#10 - It Comes at Night
Horror film following a man (Joel Edgerton) as he learns that the evil stalking his family home may be only a prelude to horrors that come from within. Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within him as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul. My Score 7.5/10

#9 - John Wick 2
In Chapter 2, John Wick is forced out of retirement again by a former associate plotting to seize control of an international assassin's guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world's deadliest killers. My Score 8/10. My Review

#8 - Beauty and the Beast
Real-life adaptation of the Disney animated classic of the tale as old as time. Starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, and Josh Gad. My Score 8.5/10. My Review

#7 - Lego Batman
There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker's (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover,  he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing and try to work with others. Maybe his butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes), sidekick Robin (Michael Cera), and Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson) can show him a thing or two about becoming a family.
My Score 9/10. My Review

#6 - Split
James McAvoy plays a character named Kevin who suffers from dissociative identity disorder which causes him to contain the personalities of 23 unique identities inside his mind. Compelled by one of his identities he is compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy)as a war of survival rages inside of Kevin between all of those contained within him.
My Score 7.5/10. My Review

#5 - Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Vol 2 brings back writer/director James Gunn, the main stars (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Batista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel), as well as some new additions to the main credits (Michael Rooker, Karen Gillian, and Kurt Russell). The story centers on Peter Quill (Pratt) and the other Guardians as they are hired by an alien race, the Sovereign, to protect their precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket (Cooper) has stolen the items they were sent to guard, the Sovereign dispatch their armada to search for vengeance. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter's parentage is revealed. My Score 8.5/10. My Review

#4 - Wonder Woman
An Amazon princess, Diana (Gal Gadot), finds her idyllic life on an island occupied only by female warriors interrupted when a pilot (Chris Pine) crash-lands nearby. After rescuing him, she learns that World War I is engulfing the planet, and vows to use her superpowers to restore peace. Wonder Woman is the first true female super heroine introduced back in 1941 and after 76 years she finally gets the big-screen debut that she deserves in this great film directed by Patty Jenkins.
My Score 8.5/10. My Review

#3 - Get Out
Get Out is a horror film following Chris and his girlfriend, Rose. Now that they have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean, her parents. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.
My Score 8.5/10. My Review

#2 - Logan
LoganHugh Jackman's final appearance after 17 years as Wolverine, is the ultimate experience any actor could ever ask for as their final performance as a character. It's 2029, in the film, and mutants are all gone, or very nearly so. An isolated Logan is drinking his days away in a hideout on a remote stretch of the Mexican border with an ailing Charles Xavier, whose singular mind is plagued by worsening seizures. Logan's attempts to hide from the world end abruptly when a mysterious woman appears with an urgent request to shepherd an extraordinary young girl to safety.
My Score 9.25/10. My Review

#1 - Baby Driver
Baby Driver, directed by Edgar Wright, is the story of a talented, young getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love, and freedom. The movie also stars Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and Lily James. My Score 9.5/10. My Review
