Movies To Watch Pt 5 of 6

Summer time has come and gone taking with it another year of films that were disappointing with a few surprises and some that were as good as expected. Now that we are finished with the "dud" season of the middle and end of August we are starting to get into the time of year when some of the good smaller, independent films and hopefully some of the great horror movies. This post will cover the months of September and October showing the big releases of each weekend.


September Films 2017

9/1/17

  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind - The 40th Anniversary 4K re-release.
  • Marvel's Inhumans - IMAX special event showing of the TV show coming to ABC. Inhumans explores the never-before-told epic adventure of the royal family including Black Bolt. After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where they are greeted with surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them.


9/8/17

  • IT - Directed by Andy Muschietti ("Mama"), IT is based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name. When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.
  • Home Again - Stars Reese Witherspoon as Alice Kinney in a modern romantic comedy. Recently separated from her husband (Michael Sheen) Alice decides to start over by moving back to her hometown of Los Angeles with her two young daughters. During a night out on her 40th birthday, Alice meets three aspiring filmmakers who happen to be in need of a place to live. Alice agrees to the guys stay in her guest house temporarily, but the arrangement ends up unfolding in unexpected ways.

  • mother! - A couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), "mother!" stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer in this riveting psychological thriller about love, devotion, and sacrifice.
  • American Assassin - Follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien) a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.


9/22/17

  • Kingsman: The Golden Circle - In this 2nd film in the Kingsman franchise our heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents' strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy in order to save the world.
  • Stronger - The inspirational and heroic true-life story of Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal), the man whose iconic photo from the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing captured the hearts of the world.
  • Lego Ninjago - The battle for Ninjago City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon, who also happens to be Lloyd's dad. Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their inner power of Spinjitzu.
  • Battle of the Sexes - In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women's movement, the 1973 tennis match between women's World #1 Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men's-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was bill as the Battle of the Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting with more personal and complex battles.


9/29/17

  • Flatliners - Remake/Sequel? of the 1990 film of the same name. Five medical students hoping to gain insight into the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment. By stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience. As the investigation becomes more and more perilous, they are forced to confront their sins of their pasts, as well as contend with the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.
  • American Made - Based on a true story. Barry Seal (Tom Cruise), a TWA pilot, is recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States that spawned the birth of the Medellin cartel and eventually almost brought down the Reagan White House with eh Iran Contra scandal.

  • Blade Runner 2049 - Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
  • The Mountain Between Us - A man (Idris Elba) and a woman (Kate Winslet) must work together to survive following a plan crash in the mountains.
  • My Little Pony: The Movie - A dark force threatens Ponyville, and the Mane 6 embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship to save their home.

10/13/17
  • The Foreigner - Starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan. A timely action thriller from the director of "Casino Royale". The film tells the story of humble London businessman Quan (Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love, his teenage daughter, is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Brosnan) whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers.
  • Happy Death Day - Blumhouse Pictures (Split, Get Out, Whiplash) produces an original and inventive rewinding thriller. College student (Jessica Rothe) relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer's identity.
  • Marshall - Long before he sat on the US Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. This new movie is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days- a fight alongside attorney Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson) of sexual assault and attempted murder.

  • The Snowman - When an elite squad's lead detective (Michael Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Rebecca Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.
  • Geostorm - A satellite designer (Gerard Butler) must race to avert a catastrophe when the planet's climate control satellites begin to malfunction in this sci-fi action adventure.
  • Boo! 2: A Madea Halloween - Madea and the gang are back for this hilarious sequel. Madea, Bam, and Hattie venture to a haunted campground and the group must literally run for their lives when monsters, goblins, and the bogeyman are unleashed.
  • Only the Brave - Based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families, communities, and our country become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it. Starring Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, and Jeff Bridges.
  • Same Kind of Different as Me - Based on the inspiring true story of international art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear), who befriends a homeless man (Djimon Hounsou) in hopes of saving his struggling marriage to Debbie (Renee Zellweger), a woman whose dreams will lead all three of them on the most remarkable journey of their lives.

10/27/17
  • Jigsaw - One of the highest grossing horror franchises of all time is back, taking the Jigsaw killer's signature brand of twisted scenarios to the next level.
  • Thank You For Your Service - Follows a group of US soldiers returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they've left the battlefield.
  • Suburbicon - A peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town's dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices.




These two months are filled with vastly different types of movies and there are plenty I am looking forward to.
